Charts let you aggregate student data and glean important insights visually. You can add a Chart and customize it to see your students grouped visually by one or two characteristics.
This article covers how to:
- Add a Chart
- Chart by Two Different Characteristics
- Customize a Chart
- Remove a Chart
- Save Chart Configurations
- Export or Print a Chart
Add a Chart
To add a Chart:
- Click Chart at the top of the Student List.
- Find the Chart you would like to apply by expanding All chart options and scrolling, or by searching.
- Click the Chart name.
To change the value you are charting by, click the name of the value you are charting by at the top of the Student List and select a new value.
Charts are populated for all active students in the Student List by default. To narrow down which students appear in your Chart, you can apply Filters. To learn more, see Filter in the Student List.
Most data and information in Ellevation can be displayed as Charts in the Student List. The list of Charts in the Chart menu is comprehensive. If a data point is not included in that list, it cannot be displayed as a Chart in the Student List.
Once you add a Chart, you can click into any of the chart segments to automatically apply that segment as a filter, displaying only those students in the Student List. With the Chart Segment filter applied, you can select that segment of students to perform batch actions.
Chart by Two Different Characteristics
You can group your Chart so that students are arranged visually primarily by one value and secondarily by another. For example, to see students in the same grade grouped together and grouped by Composite level within each grade, you can add this Chart:
To chart by two different characteristics:
- Click Chart at the top of the Student List.
- Find the Chart you would like to apply primarily by expanding All chart options and scrolling, or by searching.
- Click the Chart name.
- Click Group By at the top left of the Chart.
- Find the Chart you would like to apply secondarily by expanding All chart options and scrolling, or by searching.
- Click the Chart name.
You can make changes to the way your Chart is grouped:
- To switch what you are charting by primarily and secondarily, click Swap at the top left of the Chart.
- To change the value you are grouping by, click the name of the value you are grouping by in the top left of the Chart and select a new value.
- To un-group your Chart, click the Remove icon to the right of the name of the value you are grouping by in the top left of the Chart.
You can only Group horizontal or vertical bar graph Chart Types. You can only add one Chart to the Student List at a time.
Customize a Chart
To make changes to the way your Chart looks, click Configure Chart at the top right of the Chart. For all Charts, you can:
- Change the Chart Title to fit your needs. The default title is the value you are charting by.
- Change between the different Chart Types:
- Horizontal bar graph
- Vertical bar graph
- Pie chart
- Donut chart
- Select Show Data Values to include totals for each Chart segment.
- Add X- and Y-Axis Labels.
For grouped Charts, you can change between the different Group Styles:
- Group: Students are grouped into bars that represent the number of students who have the same secondary value within each primary value section.
- Stack: Students are grouped into segments that represent the number of students who have the same secondary value within each primary value bar.
- Percent: Students are grouped into segments that represent the percentage of students who have the same secondary value within each primary value bar.
For date Charts, you can:
- Change the Time Interval to group students by Month or Year in the Chart.
- Change the Year Start to group students by Calendar Year or School Year.
For a Chart that groups students by a range of numerical values, you can customize how segments are determined by changing the Bins:
- To automatically group students into a certain number of equal segments, select Number of Bins and input the number of segments you would like the Chart to have.
- To automatically group students into equal segments that represent a certain range, select Size of Bins and input the range you would like each segment of the Chart to represent.
For example, to customize the Bins for a Composite Level Growth chart, you can group students into a certain number of equal segments by selecting Number of Bins, or into equal segments that represent a certain range by selecting Size of Bins.
Remove a Chart
To remove a Chart, click the Remove icon to the right of the Chart button at the top of your Student List.
Save Chart Configurations
You can save Chart configurations as a saved View by clicking Save As and selecting New Student List View at the top of your Student List, and share it with others by clicking Share at the top right of your Student List. To learn more, see Manage Student List Views.
Ellevation Administrators can configure default Charts that appear without expanding to all Chart options on the Student List for everyone in their school district. To learn more, see Configure Student List Defaults.
Export or Print a Chart
To export your Chart as an image, click the Download icon at the top right of the Chart. Charts are exported as .png files.
The Chart you export includes the Chart configurations you have set.
