💻 Tier(s) this is available for: Essential, Pro

The student-facing Ellevation Benchmark experience is a short, low-stress, intuitive process that takes about 20 minutes per domain (Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking). It gives students in grades 2-12 a smooth interface to demonstrate their English language proficiency.

Accessing the Assessment

Students access the Benchmark assessment through their district's Single Sign-On (SSO) platform: Google SSO, Clever, or ClassLink. There is no additional username or password to enter. The exact sign-in steps depend on which SSO platform your district uses. Google SSO is currently available for student login only; teachers and Administrators continue to use their existing login methods.

ℹ️ Note

A student can sign in for the first time only after an assessment has been assigned to them. This applies to all sign-in methods, Clever, ClassLink, and Google SSO. Assign the student's assessment before their first sign-in.

Log In with Clever or ClassLink

If your district uses Clever or ClassLink, students access Benchmark from a tile in their SSO portal.

  • After signing in to the Clever or ClassLink portal, the student selects the Ellevation Benchmark Students tile. A separate Ellevation Staff tile appears for teachers and Administrators, so students should be sure to choose the Ellevation Benchmark Students tile.

ℹ️ Note

If a student does not see the Ellevation Benchmark Students tile, check with your Ellevation Administrator.

ℹ️ Note

For administrators setting up Clever or ClassLink, your district needs to configure your SSO provider to send the correct IDs so Ellevation can provision student accounts:

  • Clever: Ellevation uses the Clever ID to provision student accounts, so your student roster must be sent directly through Clever Rostering.
  • ClassLink: Ellevation needs the TenantID and SourceID from your district's ClassLink Roster Server.

Log In with Google SSO

If your district uses Google SSO, students sign in with their district Google accounts on the Benchmark student login page.

ℹ️ Note

For administrators setting up Google SSO: Google SSO requires student email addresses. Your district can provide these in one of two ways.

Option A: Update your existing student file. Add the student email as the last column only. Do not insert new columns.

Option B: Provide a separate extract file. This option is recommended for large districts, and is especially helpful if your district has duplicate records or complex data structures.

All data continues to be processed through your existing nightly data sync.

If you have questions about your data or about setting up SSO for Benchmark, contact support@ellevationeducation.com.

  1. Go to the Benchmark student login page at students.ellevationeducation.com.
  2. Select Sign in with Google.
  3. Google verifies the student's district account.
  4. The student is signed in to Benchmark and lands on their personalized assessment page.

Two conditions affect this step depending on the student's district and device:

  • If the student is already signed in to Google on their device, no additional login is needed.
  • If the district requires multi-factor authentication (MFA), the student completes the district's usual login process.

ℹ️ Note

The first time a student signs in with Google, a Google consent screen asks them to share their email address with Ellevation. The student clicks Continue to finish signing in. This step is required only on the first login.

For administrators setting up Google SSO, the Google SSO for Benchmark Partner Setup Guide is available to make your own copy or download as a Microsoft Word document.

Benchmark Assessment Page

Upon entering, students see a personalized landing page displaying their name and a list of their assigned domains.

Students only see domains that have been assigned to them. Once an assigned domain is completed, a "completed" notification appears.

Onboarding and Technical Readiness

Before starting a specific test, students may go through a simple onboarding process to make sure they are prepared.

  • The onboarding page displays the domain name, the number of questions, and clear directions. A read-aloud feature can read these instructions to the student. To use it, click the volume icon at the top right of the description.
  • Microphone Practice: For the Speaking domain, students are required to practice recording their name and playing it back to verify their microphone is working before they can proceed.

Benchmark Tools

The assessment interface includes several features that help students navigate the tasks independently:

  • Navigation: Students use Forward and Back buttons or a Stepper (numbered questions at the bottom) to move through the test. Navigating forward automatically saves the student's work.
  • Saving and Exiting: If a student needs to stop, they can exit the window and their progress is saved. They can resume the assessment from where they left off later, as long as the testing window is still open.
  • Question Types: Students encounter Multiple Choice, Open Response (for writing), and Fill-in-the-Blank tasks. For Fill-in-the-Blank, students click a word and then click the target space rather than using drag-and-drop.
  • Audio Features: Most tasks include Primary Audio (the main task) and Secondary Audio (read-aloud for directions or answer choices). Students are limited to two listening attempts per item.
  • Skipping Questions: Students can skip questions they find too difficult and return to them later.

💡 Quick Tip

Remind students that navigating forward saves their work automatically, so they can exit and come back without losing progress as long as the testing window is open. This takes the pressure off students who need a break or run out of time in a single sitting.

Finalizing and Submission

The process concludes with a structured submission so no work is missed.

  • Submit Dialog: When a student clicks Submit on the final question, a dialog box appears. It reminds them of any skipped questions and gives them the choice to go back and review or finalize their submission.
  • Completion: After submitting, a Final Completion Page appears with a green check mark.
  • Results: Students do not receive their scores directly. Instead, results are sent to teachers and administrators to inform future instruction.
