Review and Adjust Benchmark Assignments

Reviewing assignments and adjusting proficiency tiers keeps your Ellevation Benchmark assessment accurate, so each English learner (EL) sees an assessment aligned to their current language abilities and the assessment is visible to them when it is time to begin.

Ellevation Benchmark uses tier automation to place students into Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced levels based on prior summative data. When a student has no existing ELP data, the system defaults them to the Intermediate tier and flags them with a ! icon for review. Reviewing these assignments lets you manually place those students into the correct tier based on local observations or screener scores.

ℹ️ Note

Permission to review assignments and adjust tiers in Ellevation Benchmark varies by Account Type. If you don't see these options, check with your Ellevation Administrator about your Account Type or permissions.

Review Assignments

To review assignments, navigate to the Ellevation Benchmark assessment page by selecting Benchmark from the top of Ellevation, then click Track Progress.

On the progress page, review the status column to see where students are in the process. Each student falls into one of these categories:

• Not Started: The assessment is assigned and tiered, but the student has not yet logged in.
• In Progress: The student has started but has not yet clicked Submit.
• Score Pending: The assessment is complete, but the results are pending.
• Scored: The assessment is complete, and results are available.

Optionally, use the filters on the left to search for students by School or Grade Level.

Understand Benchmark Tiers

Ellevation Benchmark measures language proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening up to three times per year, giving you reliable interim data to inform instruction and support student growth throughout the year.

Benchmark places each student into one of three difficulty tiers, Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced, so they receive questions at the right level of depth and complexity. Intentional overlap between the tiers ensures no student is disadvantaged near a boundary.

Each student receives a trusted Benchmark score (1–5) that shows where they are now and what they need to grow. Benchmark was designed by lead test developers with nearly 50 years of combined experience in state-level ELP assessments, giving educators reliable data to inform instruction and drive growth all year long.

Review Benchmark Tiers

To review students' Benchmark tiers, click the Review Assignments tab from the progress page.

Benchmark tiers are automatically assigned based on a student's summative ELP or Benchmark domain level scores.

If a student lacks this data, they are placed in the Intermediate tier by default. You can adjust tiers as needed for all Not Started assignments.

Check for alerts: Look for a ! icon. This indicates a student was automatically assigned to the Intermediate tier because they lacked prior summative or Benchmark data.

For students who have no assignment record due to missing data, manually select their tier (Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced) based on teacher observations or initial screener scores. If you believe a student has been placed in an inappropriate tier (for example, the content is too easy or too difficult), you can manually override the automation as long as the student has not started the assessment.

Optionally, you can bulk review a selection of students at once:

1. Apply filters on the left to narrow down by School and/or Grade Level.
2. Select the box next to Student Name to capture all students on the current page, or select the box next to individual students.
3. Click the ⋮ icon at the top right and select Mark as Reviewed.
4. Advance to the next page and repeat as needed to review all students.

Adjust Tiers

To adjust a tier for an individual student, click the tier under the domain you want to adjust, then select the appropriate tier.

Delete Assignments

Mistakes happen. You can delete a Benchmark assessment any time a student is still Not Started. The student can later be reassigned the assessment.

1. Click the ⋮ icon to the right of the student.
2. Select Delete Assignments and delete the domain(s).
3. Navigate back to Assign Assessment to reassign the domain and tier, which lets the student start fresh.
