Assign Classroom Modifications/Instructional Supports

Classroom Modifications/Instructional Supports help ELs access learning without changing the standards they are working toward. These supports can help ELs understand content, complete assignments, develop their English, and feel included and comfortable in their classes. This article covers how to assign, edit, and delete Classroom Modification/Instructional Support assignments for individual students and groups.

Assign Classroom Modifications/Instructional Supports for Individual Students

To keep your EL program records current, users with edit access to Classroom Modifications/Instructional Supports can assign or update them on the Classroom Modifications/Instructional Supports tab of the Student Profile.

ℹ️ Note

To navigate to a student's Classroom Modifications/Instructional Supports tab, search for the student using the search bar or locate them via the Student List. See Learn about Classroom Modifications/Instructional Supports for navigation steps.

To assign Classroom Modifications/Instructional Supports for an individual student:

  1. On the student's Classroom Modifications/Instructional Supports tab, click Assign New.
  2. Select the Academic Period for the modifications.
  3. Select how you want to assign modifications: For All Instructional Settings or By Subject Area.
    • For All Instructional Settings assigns the same selected modifications across all subject area courses.
    • By Subject Area assigns differentiated modifications by subject: ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, ELD, Elective, and/or All Subjects. Select all that apply for each subject area, repeating as needed for different courses.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Select the Classroom Modifications/Instructional Supports to assign to the student.
  6. Click Save.

Assign Classroom Modifications/Instructional Supports for Multiple Students at Once

The Student List lets you batch-assign Classroom Modifications/Instructional Supports to many students at once, saving time when updating records at the start of an academic period. There are two options: assign new modifications, or copy modifications from a previous academic period.

To begin, navigate to the Student List and select your students:

  1. Click Students on the navigation bar, then select Student List.
  2. Select the students you want to update.
    • To select specific students, click the checkbox next to each student's name.
    • To select all students in your current view, click the checkbox next to Student at the top of the list. If results span multiple pages, click the link to Select all students that meet this search across pages.
  3. Click Edit at the top of the student list, then select Assign Classroom Modifications.

Bulk Assign New Classroom Modifications/Instructional Supports

  1. Select the appropriate academic period, select Assign new, then click Next.
    • To remove and replace any existing modifications for the selected academic period, check Remove and replace any existing Classroom Modifications. Leaving this unchecked will add the selected modifications to any the student already has for that period.

  1. Select For All Instructional Settings or By Subject Area.
    • Selecting For All Instructional Settings will assign all selected modifications to every student across all subjects.
  2. Select the appropriate Classroom Modifications/Instructional Supports, then click Assign to [x] students.

Bulk Copy Classroom Modifications/Instructional Supports from a Previous Academic Period

  1. Select the academic period you want to copy modifications into.
  2. Select Copy from a previous academic period, then choose the academic period to copy from.
    • To remove and replace any existing modifications for the destination period, check Remove and replace existing Classroom Modifications.
  3. Click Assign to [x] students.

  1. Click Confirm Assignment.

Edit or Delete Classroom Modification/Instructional Support Assignments

⚠️ Warning

Deleting an academic period removes all modifications for that period and cannot be undone. If you only want to remove specific modifications within a period, use Edit to uncheck them rather than deleting the period.

Edit Assigned Modifications

To edit modifications assigned in a specific academic period:

  1. On the student's Classroom Modifications/Instructional Supports tab, click Edit in the row of modifications you want to update.
  2. Check or uncheck the Classroom Modifications/Instructional Supports as needed.
  3. Optionally, add a comment.
  4. Click Save.

Delete Assigned Modifications

To delete all modifications for an academic period:

  1. Click the icon in the row for the academic period you want to remove, then select Delete Academic Period.
  2. Click Yes, delete in the confirmation popup to confirm.

ℹ️ Note

If you want your EL team to start fresh at the beginning of each year or semester, you can batch clear Classroom Modification/Instructional Support assignments for all students as an Ellevation Administrator. To learn more, see Batch Clear Manually Maintained Data.
