View Ellevation as Another Account Type or User

The View As feature lets you experience Ellevation through the lens of another Account Type or specific user, so you can review Permissions, troubleshoot issues, and prepare trainings with confidence. What you can see is always limited by your own access, which keeps student data private and FERPA-compliant.

ℹ️ Note

To protect student privacy and maintain FERPA compliance, your ability to View As a different Account Type or user is restricted based on your own Ellevation Account Type. You cannot see data about students whose information you do not have access to in Ellevation, even when viewing as another Account Type or user.

Common reasons you might use this feature include:

• Reviewing another user's Permissions
• Troubleshooting issues that other users are experiencing
• Replicating the experience of an Account Type to lead a training session

Users with the appropriate level of access can view Ellevation as another Account Type to see the Permissions and access level that Account Type has. Some users can also view Ellevation as a specific user to replicate that person's experience and take actions within their account.

View As an Account Type or Specific User

To View As an Account Type or specific user, first navigate to the View As page:

1. Click your initials in the grey circle at the top right corner of the page.
2. Click View As... in the bottom left corner of the menu.

View As an Account Type

Once you are on the View As page, choose the Account Type you want to view:

1. Select View as Account Type.
2. Click the Select an Account Type dropdown.
3. Select the Account Type you would like to View As from the list. You can only View As an Account Type whose Master Account Type is lower in the Account Type hierarchy than your own:
   • Administrator
   • Specialist
   • Principal
   • Teacher / View Only
4. Click View As Account Type.
5. You will now see the data you have access to in Ellevation, with the Permissions and access level of the Account Type you selected.

ℹ️ Note

Users of the Account Type you are viewing as may have additional restrictions that further limit which students they can access in Ellevation.

📝 Select an Account Type, then click View As Account Type.

View As a Specific User

To replicate an individual user's experience instead:

1. Select View As a Specific User.
2. Click the Find a User dropdown.
3. Type the name of the user you would like to View As and select their name from the list.
4. Click View as Specific User.
5. You will now see Ellevation with the data, Permissions, and access level of the user you selected, and you can take actions as that user.

📝 Find a user by name, then click View As Specific User.

View as a Specific User from User Management

You can also view as a specific user from the User Management page.

ℹ️ Note

The User Management area is available to Administrator accounts. If you don't see User Management under the gear menu, use the previous method.

1. Select the gear icon, then go to User Management > Users.

2. Locate the user you want to view as. If you don't know the user's name, narrow the list with filters: set Account Type to the role you're looking for (for example, Principal or ELL Specialist) and set School to the school you want to view. For example, to view as a user at Sagan Elementary, filter by that Account Type and select Sagan Elementary as the School. 

📝 If you can't find a person you're looking for, you might need to edit the Account Status to include Inactive users.

3. Hover over the user's name to reveal a dropdown. Click the caret, then select View As this User.

Stop Viewing As Another Account Type or User

While you are viewing as another Account Type or user, the grey circle with your initials in the top right corner turns orange. To see details about who or what you are viewing as, or to access their My Information, Schools, or Teachers page, click the orange circle.

To stop viewing as an Account Type or specific user:

1. Click the orange circle at the top right corner of the page.
2. Click Back to My Account in the bottom left corner of the menu.
3. You will now return to Ellevation with your own data, Permissions, and access level.

📝 Click the orange circle, then Back to My Account to exit View As.
